- 1. Give yourself time - The most successful commercial moves are the ones that are planned. Start your planning schedule between a year to six months in advance.
- 2. Make a list - A comprehensive list detailing all the things needing to be completed is key. List everything from booking a removals company, sourcing energy suppliers through to changing the address on business cards and stationery.
- 3. Don't do it alone - Allocating a 'project team' from your staff, with a delegated set of responsibilities and timescales, can help you achieve your move, without all the headaches.
- 4. Consider where you are moving to - Does the property or the office that you are moving to require any works prior to occupation? Ensuring that your new environment is fit for purpose will help ensure that the disruption to your business is kept to a minimum.
- 5. Check your dilapidation responsibility - Companies often do not realise that through their lease agreements that they have a legal responsibility to undertake works on the demise that they are vacating.
- 6. Time to move? - If your business typically trades Monday to Friday, moving at the weekend to prevent any 'down time' can be beneficial.
- 7. What needs to move? - Creating an inventory of the items that need moving will give you a rough idea of time span and the capacity of the vehicle you might require.
- 8. Floor plan - Creating a floor plan of your new demise is integral to a successful move. Without a plan of where items need to be placed, chaos can occur.
- 9. Colour coding and labelling - It might sound strange, but colour coding the areas on your plan along with your labelling system, can make your move more organised and time efficient. Also, don't forget to ensure your crates are labelled on the side not the top!
- 10. Provisions - It's the little touches that can make all the difference. In our experience, little gestures such as the provision of food and drink when moves are completed are often well received.
